What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a specialized tooth restoration, composed of two parts, a “post” and a “crown”. The post is inserted directly into the gum tissue, in order to serve as an artificial “root”. After this post has healed, an abutment is placed on it, and a crown, or artificial tooth, is attached to the abutment.

This crown is crafted from advanced porcelain or ceramic materials, and is designed to look and feel just like your original tooth.

By using this two-part implantation process, dental implants offer a superior method of tooth restoration. They last a very long time, and look and feel completely natural.

How Are Dental Implants Placed?

The dental implantation process usually consists of two appointments. Once Dr. Quinn or Dr. Mitchell have determined that you are eligible for a dental implant, you will come in to have the post inserted into your gum tissue.

Under a local anesthetic, a small opening will be made in the gum tissue. Then, the titanium or zirconium post is placed in the gum, and the area is stitched up. Over the next 3-6 months, the post will bond permanently with the underlying gum or jaw tissue.

While the gum and jaw tissue heals, Dr. Quinn or Dr. Mitchell will begin crafting a ceramic crown that will mimic the shape, appearance, and color of your original tooth.

Once the healing process is complete, the crown will be attached to the post’s abutment, using a specialized dental adhesive. That’s it! Once the crown is attached, the process is complete.

What Are The Benefits Of Dental Implants?

Dental implants have a number of benefits that make them the best choice for replacing one or more missing teeth. Let’s take a look at some of these benefits now.

  • Requires no special care – Dental implants, unlike other tooth restorations such as dentures or dental bridges, do not require any specialized care. They can be brushed and flossed just like a real tooth, and are even resistant to staining and discoloration.
  • Permanent tooth restoration – Dental implants, when cared for properly, will last for the rest of your life. It’s common for dental implants to last 30 years or longer. In comparison, bridges usually last 5-15 years, and dentures sometimes last only 2-5 years.
  • Looks and feels natural – Dental implants are indistinguishable from natural teeth. They look and feel totally natural, whether you’re chewing, smiling, or speaking.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are the very best solution to replace one or more teeth. The only thing better would be a natural tooth. Dental implants are made of titanium but restored with a porcelain crown designed to look like natural teeth while also providing a great deal of strength and chewing capability. At Smiles for Life, we take extra measures to ensure not only your comfort, but the absolute highest success rate possible for our surgical procedures. We also employ CT imaging in our office which will tell us ahead of time exactly what size implant you’re able to tolerate and whether or not you have any unseen complications, thus lowering your surgical risk tremendously. Many more patients are able to receive dental implants thanks to our CT technology. Call today to see if you’re a candidate.

CEREC Crowns

We utilize the CEREC same-day crown technology in our office. This amazing technology allows us to use a 3D camera to scan your teeth instead of taking a messy impression. Then, take that scan and create your all porcelain crown while you wait! There are no more painful temporaries or second visits to get numb again. Whether you’re here on vacation, have a limited schedule, lack transportation or just simply don’t want to keep coming in, you’ve found the right office!

Invisalign / Clear Correct
